how to become a trauma surgeon

So I'm just starting out in college and want to make sure that I'm doing things the right way to become a trauma surgeon. Yes, the hours are bad, and some other doctors make more money, but this is what I'm interested in. When someone is brutally messed up, I want to intervene to save their life.. because somebody should, and I think I have the potential to learn how to do it (given enough books and bothering enough professors of course :p).

My high school grades were abysmal, probably 2.0 - 2.5 GPA. My first semester of CC just finished though (General Studies transferring to Bio at a state uni). My college GPA is 4.0. The plan for courseload is to finish all the chem's and math's asap, get some gen ed classes over with, and then take whatever other bio-related classes are available for electives to reach the 120 credits for a BS. It should be 15 credits per semester, or more if the classes look easy (balancing with work / volunteering). Also Summer courses to speed things along.

I plan on attending UMass for premed (or maybe University of Rhode Island, still on the fence). URI has a transfer program with my CC that reduces the tuition of the junior and senior years by 30%. URI also has an early-entry program for Brown. From what I hear though (pending touring) UMass is a better school to go to. (And then maybe on to Yale instead of Brown [for a reach]?)

Either way, right now my volunteer work is at a local soup kitchen. I want to get into a hospital though, but I'm really not sure how to do that. I don't have a family doctor to talk to about it. Does it matter what I do as a volunteer at a hospital, or is it only important to volunteer at one? Aside from making connections.

Also, at some point should I get certified as an EMT-B? I would love to do that for my job instead of delivering pizza (though it would be a pay cut, go figure), but the book looks intense. My CC offers an EMT-B class, 7 credits. Maybe this should wait until after Human A & P?

---

I really just want to be sure of the next couple of steps to take. Neither of my parents have college degrees and the only advice they give is "I know you can do it," which helps approximately 100% less than they think it does :/

Lastly, is this emergency medicine or acute care or critical care? Sorry if this was too wordy. I did actually use the search function once first
